Review of Delivery Suite written by a patient
16th May 2016

My baby was delivered by caesarean section after a period where baby had an unstable lie. Amazing person centred service received at delivery suite and theatre staff who kept me and my partner informed about the procedure before and throughout. Highly recommend delivery suite to other expectant mums.

Nurses and ward staff generally lovely, professional and helpful apart from some night nurses who didn't careless. Doctors and consultants were uncaring and full of self importance, rude, unreliable, unable to provide any decent communication apart from emphasizing it was almost 17:00 so time to go home. 8 nights in hospital, saw doctor 4 times in total, first time after 3 days to be told that I was on the wrong ward and that is why he hadn't been to see me, when he did he said I needed a lumber puncture which would be done on Monday, he said that he could have been done earlier in the week and I could have been home for the weekend but as he didn't know where i was it didn't happen. I understand GRH is on red alert due to bed shortage, hardly surprising the way my case was managed. I tied up a bed for 8 nights for no reason apart from lack of interest from the doctors

Ward 3a I recently spent 3 nights in the care of Ward 3a of Glos. Royal Hospital after having surgery on a broken femur. Having been discharged, I would really like to express what a great service I received. All of the staff within the ward (it will be unfair to single out individuals as they all were brilliant) were friendly, professional, knowledgable and went above and beyond to provide an excellent patient experience. My injury required major surgery and subsequently I was in a lot of pain, but the nurses were very positive and nothing seemed too much trouble. I was seen to regularly, assisted within good time, and I was get up to date on everything. I was very impressed with how organised the ward was, under the careful guidance of Wesley, and all staff seemed to work really well as a team. This again helped to make the patient experience even better. I cannot praise the staff of Ward 3a enough; they are a shining example of how well an NHS hospital ward should be run. They should all be very proud of their efforts. Keep up the great work!!

Review of Ward 8a written by a patient
7th May 2016

Good things about the ward were the level of cleanliness which was good, and the food which was generally palatable and there was a reasonable choice. Mostly the doctors were pleasant and helpful in answering questions etc, I did have to repeat the same information about my symptoms and the course of the illness to each new doctor I saw, which was about 6. One or two of the nurses and other ward staff were lovely and really went out of their way to find out what you needed and make you comfortable. However, generally I felt very un-cared for by ward staff, who did many things which showed that they were not really thinking about the needs of individual patients. For example, the first few nights I was there, all the lights were suddenly put on for the drugs round when all the patients were sleeping. (When other staff were on duty only side lights were put on.) One of the sisters, who was very caring, brought me a fan when I had a temperature, which was helpful for my very bad headache. Other staff taking my temperature would turn it off and then not remember to turn it on again. I also became very light sensitive and had the curtain pulled between my bed and the next to block out the light from the window, but this was constantly being pulled back by staff without asking. No eye shades were available to patients on the ward. One of the nurses ( an agency nurse(?) with a name like Angie Chirawakie(?)told me off for not asking for medication at the right time/to the right person. She told a doctor that the patient next to me had not been sick the previous day when she had been sick twice to my knowledge. She said 'I nursed her all day' when she had stopped her shift at 2.00 p.m. When I had been on the ward for 5 days a lovely new staff nurse, called Tara arrived. She greeted the whole ward, introduced herself and her rank, and had a really kind caring manner, apologizing to me by name for accidentally pulling the curtain open a bit. It was all so comforting and unusual that is made me cry! I often had very bad migraines/headaches in the middle of the night. It was very difficult to get any attention and even if someone had answered the bell it took 20-40 minutes for me to receive any pain relieving medication. Often I would have to ask several people over a period of time. Similarly I had very sore lips one night and asked two nursing assistants for some Vaseline. Both said they would see if they could find some. Nothing happened so I asked a staff nurse. My lips were so sore that I thought I would not be able to sleep. After 1 hour 15 minutes, no-one had brought anything, at which point I found my mislaid lip salve on the bathroom floor. No one ever said they could not or would not do anything, but rather they said 'I'm just ...' or 'I'll just do such and such then I'll...' I understand that my needs were not a medical emergency but I was sometimes in severe pain. A Nurse Rani was asked to come to me by an assistant as I was getting a bad migraine. She said'Just coming' twice then eventually walked straight past me. The assistant told her it was me with the migraine and she looked at me then just moved on to a sleeping patient. I felt of no significance , and that I had absolutely no power or control in this situation. All that I have described may make it sound as if i was a very difficult or exacting patient. I certainly tried not to be difficult and I appreciate that the staff have a hard job with lots of competing calls on their time. Notes were kept pushed down the end of the bed or left on the bed, which was not always comfortable. It would be better if the notes were kept in a proper container. On the ward there was notice up saying 'Do no harm'. I have to say that I thought the attitude of the staff did harm to me and others in the ward.

I went to Gloucester Royal A&E. I was seen within ten minutes by a triage nurse, then treated after around another five minutes or so, brilliant. Your staff were friendly, professional and did their job very well. Thank you very much. If going to hospital with serious health concerns can be classed as pleasant, then it was indeed so.

I had great care at every appointment I had a long wait on occasions (once over an hour) I sat next to a patient who complained loudly, I wonder if an explanation could be given on the screen.

I was admitted to the delivery suite for induced labour after my baby died at 16 weeks gestation (a missed miscarriage). I was looked after with great kindness and compassion all the time I was in hospital - on the day the baby's death was confirmed, the day I went to take the first drugs, and on the two days I was in to deliver, and the resulting surgery due to a retained placenta. The hospital staff went above and beyond looking after just my physical health - they informed my GP and community midwife, as well as phoning the hospital where I had recently moved from to cancel my 20 week scan. They were reassuring about the process, and were very thoughtful - for example sitting with me while my husband went out for a moment, and being very attentive. They were also very caring of my husband who stayed with me throughout this process, and he was able to stay because of the family room (we were in Snowdrop). Handprints and photos were taken of our precious tiny baby, and we have had ongoing support from the bereavement midwife. Obviously I would not want anyone to be in the situation I have been through, but the care has been exceptional. I was being consulted at all stages, and at no point did I feel I was being hurried into making decisions. A couple of things - at 16 weeks gestation the baby's features degrade very quickly, so it is worth spending time with the baby immediately after it is born - when we saw her again a few hours later this was more distressing and I am glad we did look at her for a few moments immediately after she was born. I was given lots of useful leaflets, including one to stop baby/pregnancy related post coming through the letterbox. I would recommend that parents in this situation are encouraged to clear their online search history too, as I was confronted with an advert for clearblue pregnancy tests the day after I got home from hospital, which was upsetting.
